Body Contouring Compared: EMSCULPT NEO, CoolSculpting and Venus Bliss MAX
EMSCULPT NEO, CoolSculpting and Venus Bliss MAX reduce fat by three different mechanisms, and only two of them build muscle. Here is what each one does, which areas it treats, how many sessions to expect and how they combine.

Key facts
- EMSCULPT NEO builds muscle and reduces fat with HIFEM and radiofrequency; CoolSculpting freezes fat cells; Venus Bliss MAX warms fat with a 1064 nm diode laser and adds RF and EMS applicators for skin and muscle.
- None of the three is a weight-loss treatment. Each works on a local, pinchable layer of fat and does not move the scale or tighten a large excess of skin.
- EMSCULPT NEO is planned as four to six 30-minute sessions; CoolSculpting in 35 to 60 minute cycles per area; Venus Bliss MAX as three to eight sessions of 30 to 60 minutes.
- Full results take one to three months with CoolSculpting, three months after the last EMSCULPT NEO session and three to six months with Venus Bliss MAX, with first changes visible within a few weeks.
- Paradoxical adipose hyperplasia is a rare CoolSculpting effect with a pooled incidence of about 0.22 percent in a 2025 meta-analysis. The three devices are often combined, and the plan comes from the assessment.
EMSCULPT NEO, CoolSculpting and Venus Bliss MAX are the three non-surgical body contouring devices offered at Ideal Body Clinic. All three reduce a layer of fat in a treated zone without incisions or anaesthesia, but they get there by different routes: one combines electromagnetic muscle contractions with radiofrequency heat, one freezes fat cells, and one warms them with a diode laser while separate applicators tone muscle and firm the skin.
Because the mechanisms differ, so do the areas each device can treat, the number of sessions, the timeline for results and the people each one suits. This guide sets the three side by side so you know which questions to bring to a consultation. None of them is a weight-loss treatment, a point repeated below because it is the most common misunderstanding we hear.
What does each treatment actually do?
EMSCULPT NEO delivers two energies through one applicator strapped over the treatment area. High-intensity focused electromagnetic energy (HIFEM) forces the underlying muscle into thousands of full contractions, which stimulates the fibres to grow, while radiofrequency heats the fat layer above the muscle until fat cells are damaged and later cleared by the body. In a sham-controlled trial on the abdomen, three weekly sessions produced an average 28 percent reduction in fat thickness and a 24 percent increase in muscle thickness at three months. See our EMSCULPT NEO in Montreal page.
CoolSculpting works by cryolipolysis. An applicator draws in or presses against a pinchable fold of tissue and cools it for about 45 minutes. Fat cells are more sensitive to cold than skin, nerves or muscle, so they crystallise and die while the surrounding tissue is unharmed, and the body removes them over the following one to three months. A single cycle reduces the fat layer in the treated zone by up to 20 to 25 percent. Details are on our CoolSculpting in Montreal page.
Venus Bliss MAX is a platform with three separate applicators. A 1064 nm diode laser passes through the skin and warms the fat layer to reduce it, a combination with RF and PEMF that has been studied for fat reduction of the abdomen and flanks. A multipolar radiofrequency and pulsed electromagnetic field handpiece, called (MP)², heats the skin to support collagen and improve the look of cellulite and texture. An EMS applicator drives muscle contractions for toning. See our Venus Bliss MAX contouring page.
What does none of these treatments do?
None of the three is a weight-loss method. Each works on a local layer of subcutaneous fat, the pinchable layer under the skin, and none reaches the visceral fat around the organs. A person whose main goal is weight loss will get more from a medical weight management plan.
None of them tightens a large excess of loose skin. The radiofrequency in EMSCULPT NEO and Venus Bliss MAX improves skin firmness to a modest degree, but skin that hangs after major weight loss or pregnancy is a surgical question.
None of them replaces exercise or diet for maintenance. Destroyed fat cells are gone, but the remaining cells can grow with weight gain, and muscle built by HIFEM or EMS fades without use.
Which body areas can each device treat?
EMSCULPT NEO has applicators for the abdomen, flanks, buttocks, thighs and hamstrings, arms (biceps and triceps) and calves.
CoolSculpting has the widest range of fat-only areas: under the chin and jawline, abdomen, flanks, upper arms, bra line and back, inner and outer thighs, buttocks and hips. It is the only one of the three we use under the chin.
Venus Bliss MAX is licensed by Health Canada for non-invasive lipolysis of the abdomen, flanks, back and thighs in people with a body mass index of 30 or less. Its (MP)² handpiece adds the thighs and buttocks for cellulite and skin texture, and the EMS applicator is used mainly on the abdomen and core. The licence for any device sold in Canada can be checked by name in Health Canada's MDALL database.
Who suits which treatment?
EMSCULPT NEO suits people who want both fat reduction and a visible increase in muscle definition in the same zone, most often the abdomen or buttocks, and it can be used at a body mass index of up to 35. It is not used in pregnancy or with electronic or metal implants such as a pacemaker.
CoolSculpting suits people with a distinct, pinchable pocket of fat that fits an applicator, who want fat reduction without a muscle component and who tolerate cold. It is not used in people with cryoglobulinemia, cold agglutinin disease or paroxysmal cold haemoglobinuria, and a recent surgery or hernia in the area must be discussed first.
Venus Bliss MAX suits people close to their goal weight, typically a body mass index of 30 or under, with a combination of concerns in one area: a soft layer of fat, cellulite or uneven texture, and a lack of tone. It is not used in pregnancy, during IVF, with a pacemaker, defibrillator or metal implants, with certain thyroid disorders or with conditions triggered by heat.
How many sessions are needed and how long does each take?
EMSCULPT NEO is planned as four to six sessions of 30 minutes, spaced five to ten days apart, so a course usually runs over four to six weeks.
CoolSculpting is planned in cycles. Each cycle treats one applicator position for 35 to 60 minutes, and larger areas such as the abdomen often need two or more cycles per visit.
Venus Bliss MAX is planned as three to eight sessions of 30 to 60 minutes depending on the goal: shorter courses for a single technology, longer ones when fat, skin and muscle are all treated.
When do results show and how long do they last?
EMSCULPT NEO produces the earliest change, usually a firmer feel within a few weeks, with the full fat and muscle result three months after the last session. Muscle gains hold for about six months or longer with regular activity.
CoolSculpting shows its first change at about three weeks and the full result between one and three months. Because the cells are removed, the reduction is long lasting; our CoolSculpting page notes that results can last over three years when weight stays stable.
Venus Bliss MAX shows initial results after a few sessions and the full result three to six months after the course.
What are the side effects of each treatment?
None of the three requires downtime, and you can return to work the same day.
EMSCULPT NEO leaves muscle soreness like a hard workout for a day or two, and sometimes temporary redness or warmth. During the session it feels like strong contractions with the warmth of a heating pad.
CoolSculpting commonly causes redness, swelling, bruising and tenderness, and numbness or altered sensation that can last several weeks. During the cycle you may feel pulling, pinching and intense cold until the area goes numb.
Venus Bliss MAX can leave redness, warmth, mild swelling and tenderness, muscle soreness after the EMS component and occasionally a bruise from applicator pressure or suction.
What is paradoxical adipose hyperplasia?
Paradoxical adipose hyperplasia (PAH) is a rare, delayed effect specific to cryolipolysis in which the treated area becomes larger and firmer instead of smaller, usually several months after the cycle. The enlarged tissue does not go away on its own and is most often corrected with liposuction.
The published incidence is low but higher than early manufacturer estimates. A 2025 systematic review and meta-analysis pooling 28 studies and more than 13,000 patients put it at about 0.22 percent, with a range of 0.10 to 0.47 percent, or roughly one patient in 455. We discuss this risk at every CoolSculpting consultation.
Can the three treatments be combined?
Yes, and combinations are common. The most frequent pairing is CoolSculpting or the Venus Bliss laser for fat reduction, followed several weeks later by EMSCULPT NEO for muscle definition in the same zone once swelling has settled. Where skin texture is a concern as well as fat, the (MP)² handpiece is added to the plan.
The order comes from the assessment: a thick, pinchable fat layer over weak muscle usually starts with fat reduction, while a thin fat layer where the goal is definition starts with EMSCULPT NEO alone.
How much does body contouring cost in Montreal?
Cost depends on the device, the number of areas and the number of sessions or cycles, and packages that combine devices are priced differently from single treatments. Each treatment page lists the current price range for that device, and the exact quote is confirmed at the consultation once the plan is set.
What is the first step?
Book a consultation at one of our three clinics in the Montreal area. The practitioner will measure the area, check that you meet the criteria for the device you are considering, including body mass index and contraindications, and set out the number of sessions and the expected timeline. Bring a note of any implants, recent surgery or medical conditions.
You can browse all of our aesthetic treatments to see where body contouring fits alongside other body options.
Results vary from person to person and are not guaranteed. Nothing here is medical advice — book a consultation and we will look at your case.
