What does platelet-rich fibrin do?
Platelet-rich fibrin starts the same way as platelet-rich plasma. A small sample of your blood is drawn and spun to concentrate the platelets that carry your growth factors.
The difference is the spin. Platelet-rich plasma is prepared with an anticoagulant and spun fast, so it stays liquid and its growth factors are released at once. Platelet-rich fibrin is spun slower and without one, so the blood does what it would do naturally and forms a fibrin mesh. That mesh holds the growth factors in the tissue and lets them out gradually, over about a week rather than in a single burst. Choosing platelet-rich fibrin is choosing that slower release.
It is given as a course, so the effect compounds. Most people are booked for three to six sessions, four to six weeks apart, and the skin keeps changing for three to six months after the last one.
What areas can it treat?
Platelet-rich fibrin suits thin, delicate skin, which is why the under-eye area is the use it is best known for. It also works across the face, the neck and the décolleté, where the concern is skin quality rather than volume.
It is placed with a fine needle or a cannula depending on the area. Platelet-rich fibrin for hair restoration follows a different protocol and is treated as its own service. Every course begins with a medical consultation to confirm the treatment is appropriate for you.
